I can almost feel people grimace through the computer when I suggest a sunrise session but, – hear me out – it is hands down, one of my favorite times of the day to shoot. Here are just a few of the reasons why.
Popular locations for taking photos are often crowded in the evenings but very rarely will there be any crowd at sunrise. I’ve never found myself jockeying for space or having to pick and choose where to situate my subjects based on folks milling around in the background at sunrise. We have the run of the place and the freedom to work in an area uncluttered by other humans. Think empty beaches, botanical gardens, and parks. Winning!
In addition to wide open, uncluttered spaces, we get the benefit of a variety of lighting; from the beautiful “blue”hour light, just as the sun begins to rise to the warm, golden light as the sun rises higher. This creates a story with light within your own story and the variety of photos we can achieve is a huge plus. Blue hour light is soft and peaceful while golden hour light is warm and vibrant and I love to have the opportunity to use all of it.
One last thing to consider when deciding on your session time is that younger kids often rise early anyway so families with younger children tend to benefit from from this time of the day the most. The sun sets late in the warmer months, long after most babies and toddlers have already gone to bed. Getting pictures of your littlest ones while they are fresh and in a good mood rather than keeping them up past their bedtime and dealing with the stress of battling a bad mood while trying to get family photos might be worth that early wake up call. This is obviously less of an issue in the cooler months when the sun is setting earlier in the evening.
Whatever your particular needs, I’m here to work with you to find the time of day that suits your family best while also ensuring that the light and location will make your photos shine.
This sweet family agreed to meet me for their session just as the sun was rising and we were rewarded with gorgeous light and empty beaches. Please reach out via the contact page to inquire about scheduling your own session. We can even meet at the beach!
